Chapter 1. One can hardly overestimate the role of niobium in manufacturing various functional materials, as it is one of the main constituents of such important electro-technical materials as high-strength nanocomposites Cu-Nb and multifilamentary Nb3Sn-based and NbTi superconductors. Besides, nowadays possibilities of obtaining bulk nanostructured materials by various techniques of severe plastic deformation (SPD) are comprehensively studied, and niobium, being a refractory, but on the other hand plastic enough metal, is an ideal object for such studies. The present chapter is a review on evolution of Nb structure at SPD by different techniques and at large plastic deformation by cold drawing of composite wires (in a Cu matrix). The main attention in this chapter is paid to the original studies of the authors (with their coauthors), but the available publications on the topics considered are involved and reviewed as well.
