Academician of the RAS Mushnikov Nikolai Varfolomeyevich

Mushnikov Nikolai Varfolomeyevich is a known Russian physicist, an expert in the field of physical materials science of magnetic materials, an Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2016), has a Doctor of Sciences degree in Physics and Mathematics, majoring in physics of magnetic phenomena (2004).

His research interests spread across areas such as experimental studies of magnetism of rareearth and actinide intermetallic compounds and their hydrides. Such compounds combine the giant anisotropy and magnetostriction of f-metals with high magnetic ordering temperatures that are characteristic of iron-group metals. The interaction of the two magnetic subsystems enables one to obtain materials with unique properties. N.V. Mushnikov has devoted his works to the study of the exchange interactions, magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction, magnetic phase transitions, magnetothermal properties. To conduct his research of magnetovolume effects in a number of compounds, he has used extreme and inverse impact methods, hydrogenation and applied strong hydrostatic pressure. With his direct participation, a technology for producing nanocomposite magnetic materials that combine high values of durability, plasticity and hysteretic magnetic properties has been developed.

The Institute represented by N.V. Mushnikov actively pursues collaborations with scientists from the Czech Republic, Japan, Germany and Switzerland. Over 220 his papers are published in leading refereed journals and often quoted.

N.V. Mushnikov is a Professor of the Department of Physics of Magnetic Phenomena at the Ural Federal University named after the first Russian President B.N. Yeltsin. He has supervised 4 candidate theses. Also he is a member of the editorial board of the journal “Physics of Metals and Metallography”, a member of the Scientific Council on the issue of “Magnetism” of IMP RAS, a member of the Dissertation Council of the Ural Federal University, a Deputy Chairperson of UB RAS on scientific and organizational work, a member of the Presidium of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

N.V. Mushnikov was born on July 26, 1959 in the village Staroutkinsk of the Sverdlovsk region, Russia. After graduating from the Urals State University and postgraduate physics course at the Ural State University since 1986 he has worked at the Institute of Metal Physics. Since 2005 he has been a head of the Laboratory of ferromagnetic alloys. Since 2009 he has managed the Department of magnetic materials at IMP UB RAS.
